To My Fellow Colonists The First Settlers Of Canterbury These Poems Are Dedicated. Politician, administrator, poet, magistrate, educationalist, member of the University of New Zealand Senate. Born Milford, Mayo, Ireland, educated in France, and England. Came to Lyttelton on the `Charlotte Jane', 1850. Inspector of police 1852. In 1860 crossed the Andes with Clements Markham. Returned to Canterbury; was appointed resident magistrate. Member of the Legislative Council and Member of Parliament for Kaiapoi (1875). Minister of Justice and Commissioner of Stamps. DNZB (Vol 1, 1769-1869, p33-34, B26) and senior of Donald McLean.
