Rare & Collectible Book Auction
Tuesday, 22 - Saturday, 26 September 2026

House of Huia is thrilled to present our first Rare Book Auction of 2026, featuring a depth and breadth of quality not seen in the South Island in decades. The sale offers an outstanding selection of books, with a particular focus on New Zealand titles. Highlights include a scarce second edition of Buller's Birds and Menzies' Māori Patterns and Carvings, two rare books of exceptional visual appeal that seldom appear on the market. Buller's Birds is of particular note for the magnificent Huia plate, which holds special significance for us here at House of Huia. The sale also features a large number of local history books, many long out of print, covering townships, districts and places whose stories would otherwise be all but forgotten. There's a substantial selection of books from the 18th century, a fascinating opportunity to hold and read a book written over 300 years ago, alongside titles spanning a wide range of interesting subjects, many of them first editions. Novels and adventure fiction are well represented, and coffee table books offer both a striking display piece and a wealth of fascinating information. Rounding out the sale are a number of large book lots, each one a treasure trove and a true lucky dip. The sale will be held online only, commencing 6pm on the 26th of September.
