Lot Details

Silver plated mess deck fork correctly hallmarked for “Rodgers”, “EP”. Supplied to the expedition by Rodgers and Co, this fork was for use exclusively by the men of the mess deck. These sailors, stokers and kitchenhands formed the backbone of the expedition and took part in many of the sledging and scientific journeys. Of a simpler design than the wardroom tableware, this plain fork is monogrammed with “Discovery 1901” surrounded by a belt and buckle. Crew tableware appears less represented than wardroom pieces in institutional collections making this a very desirable example for collectors and museums alike.
