Lot Details

An exceptionally rare surviving Doulton Burslem table bowl from the Discovery expedition. This wardroom bowl was used exclusively by the officers and scientific members of the expedition; including Scott, Wilson and Shackleton. Adorned with the expedition crest "Discovery Antarctic Expedition 1901" in a belt band surrounding the image of an Emperor penguin on ice. The entire bowl is enveloped by a dark blue band in varying levels of preservation. Pressed and stamped makers mark to base. Unlike the cutlery and more robust items of tableware, the chinaware suffered badly in the harsh stormy seas of the Antarctic. Charles Royds notes in this diary more than once about the losses “The breakages continue in vast quantities in our pantry, and only about 8 teacups are left. We shall not I know have a single piece of china for a relic, if this state goes on.”
