Lot Details
Metal matchbox manufactured by R. Bell and Co, London. This tin was recovered by Ensign Earl Johnson who was onboard the USCGC Northwind during Operation Deep Freeze II, 1957. He and other crew members visited the huts of Scott and Shackleton which were in a poor state of preservation owing to the unfavourable climate of the polar region. Now heavily protected areas under the Antarctic Treaty system, relics from the huts are rarely seen on the open market.
