Walter Bowring (1874 - 1931) 'The Ariadne Case' Ink and Gouache on Board Signed bottom left on central gouache painting on recto and dated 1902 524 x 442mm 'The Press' Private artistic collection of Walter Bowring Additional information: Unframed with drawn border and notes around border. Marked and Ink stained border, with rough edges on card, including graphite transfer. In a worn condition, sketches cut and pasted in areas. Various sketches from the ‘Ariadne Case’ trial, commencing on January 20, 1902, concerning the casting adrift of the yacht ‘Ariadne’ owned by T.C Kerry on March 24, 1901. George Mumford, former captain of the Ariadne, was found guilty and sentenced to four years’ imprisonment. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history. Images can be directly connected to contemporary reporting in The Press, enhancing their significance when viewed in conjunction with written primary sources.
