Walter Bowring (1874-1931) The presentation of the testimonial to Richard Seddon by Sir John Hall at Canterbury Hall on 8 April 1902. Ink & Gouache on board Signed bottom right on recto and undated board 213 x 345mm 'The Press' Private artistic collection of Walter Bowring Additional information: A ceremony was held to present the Premier of New Zealand, Richard Seddon, with a testimonial on behalf of the colony on 8 April 1902 at Canterbury Hall. The testimonial was “unique in the annals of New Zealand” and signed by 20,000 people “holding all shades of political opinion” at the time of its presentation to the Premier by Sir John Hall, expressing public support of the decision to send New Zealand troops to the Boer War. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history.
