Walter Bowring (1874-1931) Amelius Smith Ink & Graphite on board Signed bottom left on recto Undated 523 x 414mm The Press' private archive of Walter Bowring Additional Information: Unframed.Marked and Ink stained, with rough edges on card and foxing. Including graphite transfer. In aged condition. Amelius Morland Smith was a soldier and civil servant who served in the 18th Hussars in India as a commissioned officer before arriving in Lyttelton in 1866. He became assistant secretary to Sir George Grey during his term as Governor of New Zealand before working with Sir George Bowen. He joined the department of the Colonial Secretary in October 1870 and also served as Lieutenant in Wellington’s first body of artillery. He died in June 1929. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history. Images can be directly connected to contemporary reporting in The Press, enhancing their significance when viewed in conjunction with written primary sources.
