Walter Bowring (1874-1931) Andrew Rutherford, Mendip Hills Ink, Graphite & Gouache on board Signed bottom right on recto Undated 420 x 415mm The Press' private archive of Walter Bowring Additional Information: Unframed with drawn border. Marked and Ink stained, with rough edges on card and foxing. Including graphite transfer. In aged condition. Andrew William Rutherford was a North Canterbury farmer and local politician. He arrived in New Zealand from Australia in 1859 with his father to start a sheep farm, and over a period of forty years emerged with sole ownership of a 38,000 acre run in the Amuri district of North Canterbury. He was elected to a number of local councils and boards, including the Nelson Provincial Council from 1869-72, the Amuri County Council and the Cheviot County Council. He was elected to the General Assembly in the Hurunui seat in 1902, serving under Richard Seddon and Sir Joseph Ward. He died of influenza in Christchurch on 11 November 1918. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history.
