Walter Bowring (1874-1931) The Mounted Battalions Parade Graphite, Ink and Gouache on Board Signed bottom right on recto and undated 329 x 545mm 'The Press' private archive of Walter Bowring Additional Information: Unframed with drawn border and sketches/notes around border. Marked and Ink stained border, with rough edges on card, including graphite transfer. In a worn condition with no implications to image drawn. A military review was held in Hagley Park on 24 June 1901 in honour of the royal visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall. The mounted battalions pictured included the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry, the Canterbury and Ellesmere Mounted Rifles, and newer corps such as the Ashburton Mounted Rifles, noted by the Press for their “high state of efficiency”. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history. Images can be directly connected to contemporary reporting in The Press, enhancing their significance when viewed in conjunction with written primary sources.
