Walter Bowring (1874-1931) Farewell banquet for the Governor Ink and Gouache on Board Signed bottom left in recto Undated on board (corresponds to dated article 7 April 1904) 572 x 457mm 'The Press' private archive of Walter Bowring Additional Information: Unframed with drawn border and sketches/notes around border. Marked and Ink stained, with rough edges on card and foxing. Bent frayed corners. Including graphite transfer. In a worn aged condition. Embossed impression on top left corner from 'Goodall's Bristol Boards' Sketches from the farewell banquet for the Governor, Lord Ranfurly, held at Canterbury Hall on 7 April 1904. An article in the Press reports the toasts given in extensive detail, reflecting the scenes depicted in Bowring’s work. Captain Scott, recently returned from the Antarctic Expedition, was in attendance. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history.
