Walter Bowring (1874-1931) Testimonial for the Premier & Richard Seddon and Sir John Hall Ink on Board Unsigned & Undated 145 x 415mm The Press' private archive of Walter Bowring Additional Information: Unframed with drawn border and sketches/notes around border. Marked and Ink stained, with rough edges on card and foxing. Including graphite transfer. In a worn aged condition. Includes inscriptions next to sketches labelling the people present. A ceremony was held to present the Premier of New Zealand, Richard Seddon, with a testimonial on behalf of the colony on 8 April 1902 at Canterbury Hall. The testimonial was “unique in the annals of New Zealand” and signed by 20,000 people “holding all shades of political opinion” at the time of its presentation to the Premier by Sir John Hall, expressing public support of the decision to send New Zealand troops to the Boer War. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history. Images can be directly connected to contemporary reporting in The Press, enhancing their significance when viewed in conjunction with written primary sources.
