Walter Bowring (b.1874-1931) Franco-Russian Alliance Ink on Board Signed bottom left on recto and undated 291 x 457mm 'The Press' Private archive of Walter Bowring Additional Information: Unframed with drawn border and sketches/notes around border. Marked and Ink stained border, with rough edges on card, including graphite transfer. In a worn condition with no implications to image drawn. The Franco-Russian alliance was a political and military pact signed by France and Russia in January 1894 that promised each nation military support from the other should it be attacked by Germany or Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces supported by Germany. Following Russia’s defeat in the Russo-Japanese war in 1905, Wilhelm II proposed an alliance between Russia, France and Germany against Japan and Britain. Though Tsar Nicholas II was initially favourable to the alliance, his advisors strongly opposed the idea and the alliance was never made. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history.
