Walter Bowring (1874-1931) Russian Wounded Ink & Gouache on board Signed on bottom left on recto Undated 325 x 485mm Additional information: Unframed with drawn border and sketches/notes around border. Marked and Ink stained, with rough edges on card and foxing. Including graphite transfer. In a worn aged condition. Japanese war hospital tending for Russian wounded. During the war a number of wounded Russian soldiers were placed into the care of Japanese medical staff, such as a report in the Press on February 15, 1904, concerning the placement of thirty-four Russian wounded into Japanese hospitals. - 'The Press' As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history. Images can be directly connected to contemporary reporting in The Press, enhancing their significance when viewed in conjunction with written primary sources.
