Walter Bowring (1874-1931) Japanese Invasion Ink, Gouache & Graphite on Board Signed bottom right and partial date with last digit covered (190) 457 x 579mm 'The Press' private archive of Walter Bowring Additional Information: Unframed with drawn border and sketches/notes around border. Marked and Ink stained border, with rough edges on card, including graphite transfer. In a worn condition. This scene is likely from the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905; the annotation appearing to refer to the “Japs at Manchuria” and consistent with Japanese invasion of Manchuria during the war and reports of civilian casualties. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history.
