Walter Bowring (1874-1931) Battle of Yalu River Ink & Gouache on board Signed bottom left on recto Undated 223 x 457mm The Press' private archive of Walter Bowring Additional Information: Unframed with drawn border and sketches/notes around border. Marked and Ink stained, with rough edges on card and foxing. Including graphite transfer. In a worn aged condition. Upside down embossed stamp of 'Goodall's Bristol Boards' The Battle of Yalu River was the first major land battle of the Russo-Japanese war, taking place from 30 May-1 June 1904 on the banks of the Yalu River near the border between Korea and Manchuria. The scene depicted appears to be the Japanese crossing of the Yalu River in preparation for the attack on Russian forces. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history. Images can be directly connected to contemporary reporting in The Press, enhancing their significance when viewed in conjunction with written primary sources.
