Walter Bowring (1874-1931) Flight of Chemulpo Ink and gouache on board Signed bottom right on recto and undated 257 x 577mm 'The Press' private archive of Walter Bowring Additional Information: Unframed with drawn border and sketches/notes around border. Marked and Ink stained border, with rough edges on card, right side with more damage. Including graphite transfer. In a worn condition, tinting to far left side of picture. The Battle of Chemulpo Bay was a naval engagement during the opening phase of the Russo-Japanese War, fought on 9 February 1904 near the Korean port of Chemulpo. Occurring at the same time as the Battle of Port Arthur, the clash saw a Japanese squadron confront Russian ships stationed in the neutral harbour. Outnumbered and unable to escape, the Russian cruiser Russian cruiser Varyag and the gunboat Koreets attempted a breakout but were heavily damaged by Japanese fire. After returning to port, the Russian crews scuttled their vessels to avoid capture, securing a Japanese tactical victory. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history.
