Walter Bowring (1874-1931) Farewell, Nikola (1901) Ink & Gouache on board Signed bottom right on recto Undated 285 x 456mm The Press' private archive of Walter Bowring Additional Information: Unframed with drawn border and sketches/notes around border. Marked and Ink stained, with rough edges on card and foxing. Including graphite transfer. In a worn aged condition. 'Handle with care ! Will Smudge!!' Written on the border of print. A scene from the final book in Guy Boothby’s Nikola series, Farewell, Nikola, published in 1901. The caption, “In a second, without any apparent effort, Nikola had laid him on his back” is lifted verbatim from the novel. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history.
