Walter Bowring (1874-1931) Dr Reed, Timaru Ink & Gouache on board Signed & dated bottom left on recto 427 x 419mm The Press' private archive of Walter Bowring Additional Information: Unframed. Marked and Ink stained, with rough edges on card and foxing. Including graphite transfer. In aged condition. Dr Robert Stuart Reid was a Timaru-based doctor who served in the volunteer medical corps for 25 years. He had a keen interest in sport and the arts, and was on the committee of the South Canterbury Jockey Club, as well as serving as their honorary surgeon. He left New Zealand for Vancouver in July 1904 to further pursue his medical career, and in 1910 was appointed surgeon-superintendent of Hudson’s Bay and Pacific Railway Company in Canada. He died in Vancouver on September 26, 1932, at the age of seventy-seven. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history. Images can be directly connected to contemporary reporting in The Press, enhancing their significance when viewed in conjunction with written primary sources.
