Walter Bowring (1874-1931) 'Dr Batchelor' Graphite, Ink & Gouache on board Signed & Dated (1901) left on recto 523 x 414mm The Press' private archive of Walter Bowring Additional Information: Unframed and noted 'Dr Batchelor' bottom right on recto. Marked with rough edges on card and foxing. Including graphite transfer. In aged condition. Dr Ferdinand Campion Batchelor was a doctor specialising in women’s illnesses working in Dunedin Hospital. He was born at Norfolk Island circa 1855, arriving in Dunedin as the doctor on board an emigrant ship in late 1874-early 1875. He joined the medical staff at Dunedin Hospital in 1877 and in 1890 raised concerns about unsanitary conditions, resulting in an inquiry. He was elected president of the Intercolonial Medical Congress in 1896 and was appointed consulting surgeon to the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in August 1914. He died in August 1915 due to heart failure. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history.
