Walter Bowring (1874-1931) Kinsey's Job Line Ink on board Signed bottom right on recto Undated 401 x 607mm The Press' private archive of Walter Bowring Additional Information: Unframed with drawn border and sketches/notes around border. Marked and Ink stained, with rough edges on card and foxing. Including graphite transfer. In a worn aged rough condition. Moisture damage mainly bottom right corner. Fragile condition. This cartoon is most likely referring to Sir Joseph Kinsey, a Christchurch businessman and collector who worked in shipping and insurance in the firm Kinsey and Co. Ltd. Kinsey’s role in shipping and importing is reflected in the content of the cartoon, featuring figures carrying imported goods such as liquor and one figure bearing the flag of the New Zealand Shipping Company. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history.
