Walter Bowring (1874-1931) 'TE Donne' Graphite, Ink & Gouache on board Signed right on recto Undated 523 x 414mm The Press' private archive of Walter Bowring Additional Information: Unframed and noted 'T E Donne' bottom right on recto. Marked with rough edges on card and foxing. Including graphite transfer. In aged condition. Thomas Edward Donne was a civil servant who worked as the Superintendent of the Tourist Department at the turn of the 20th century. He oversaw the International Exhibition, which opened in Christchurch on November 1 1906, and travelled extensively to promote tourism in New Zealand. He died in London in 1945. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history. Images can be directly connected to contemporary reporting in The Press, enhancing their significance when viewed in conjunction with written primary sources.
