Walter Bowring (1874-1931) 'Justice Cooper' Ink & Gouache on board Signed right on recto Undated 523 x 414mm The Press' private archive of Walter Bowring Additional Information: Unframed and noted 'F. A. Archer' bottom right on recto. Marked with rough edges on card and foxing. Including graphite transfer. In aged condition. The Hon. Sir Theophilus Cooper was a judge appointed to the Supreme Court and as President of the Arbitration Court in 1901. He served in the Supreme Court for twenty years before retiring on March 1, 1921, after which he was knighted. He died on May 19, 1925 at the age of seventy-five. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history. Images can be directly connected to contemporary reporting in The Press, enhancing their significance when viewed in conjunction with written primary sources.
