Walter Bowring (1874-1931) 'R Chisholm' Graphite, Ink & Gouache on board Signed & Dated (1901) left on recto 523 x 414mm The Press' private archive of Walter Bowring Additional Information: Unframed and noted 'R Chisholm' bottom left on recto. Marked with rough edges on card and foxing. Including graphite transfer. In aged condition. Robert Chisholm, J.P, was a Dunedin businessman who was elected mayor of the city in 1889, holding office in 1901-1902. He was a city councilman representing High Ward in 1895 and 1898, and chairman of the Royal Reception Committee for the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York and Cornwall to Dunedin in 1901. He died on June 19, 1914. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history.
