Walter Bowring (1874-1931) William Massey’s Reform Party Cabinet Lithograph Signed & dated bottom left on recto (1916) 467 x 751mm The Press' private archive of Walter Bowring Additional Information: Framed with glass (in good condition) Marked and graphite transfer. Left side with discolouration, potential water damage. In aged condition. William Ferguson Massey was the leader of the Reform Party from its foundation in 1909 until 1925 and the 19th Prime Minister of New Zealand, in office from 1912-1925. At the time of this cartoon in 1916, Massey’s government was a wartime coalition with the opposing Liberal Party, with Joseph Ward acting as honorary co-leader. This coalition was dissolved in 1919. As both an artistic creation and a historical document, the work serves as an important resource for the study of regional history. Images can be directly connected to contemporary reporting in The Press, enhancing their significance when viewed in conjunction with written primary sources.
